3-11-16 Cinzia-In questi anni di attività sul blog abbiamo effettuato molte interviste e raccolto ogni forma di testimonianza sul furetto: la più recente quella di Marie Bartholdsson che ha raccontato la sua esperienza di proprietaria ed allevatore. Oggi incontriamo Ria Hendricks, che è olandese ed è proprietaria di furetti da ben 35 anni, e da 9 ha cominciato ad allevare, la sua passione dura così tanto che oggi e’ qui per raccontarci la sua storia, per comprendere cosa è cambiato da ieri a oggi.
Salve Ria, è un vero piacere conoscerti; la tua storia con i furetti è iniziata ben 35 anni fa, potresti dirci com’è cominciata?
Mio marito è venuto a casa un giorno con uno “strano animale”, che si è rivelato essere un furetto, e non ero così felice perché ho pensato mordesse. Ma non era così, voleva solo giocare! In principio era molto difficile perché non avendo internet l’unica possibilità per sapere come si gestivano i furetti era di relazionarsi con i cacciatori. Ci fossero subito che i furetti stanno bene in coppia, così abbiamo preso un altro maschio.
Si è scoperto che erano animali incredibili, quindi ci siamo innamorati. Nel corso degli anni ci sono stati altri maschi e femmine, di solito furetti con disabilità che altri non volevano, ma che noi abbiamo accolto. Dopo anni abbiamo decisio di allevare perché non abbiamo avuto figli, quindi questi sono veramente i nostri figli, ed è sempre un grande momento con i cuccioli da educare in modo corretto; e anche se non invecchiano molto, non vogliamo vivere senza furetti!
Inoltre, i nostri furetti vivono in armonia con i nostri gatti, ed è bello prendersi cura di loro insieme.
In 35 anni di furetti, cosa pensi di aver capito su di loro?
Penso che siano animali molto particolari, carini, giocherelloni, completi, belli, è come fossero un incrocio tra un cane e un gatto; ma anche che il furetto non è adatto a tutti, non sono difficili ma hanno bisogno di molta attenzione.
Come nutri i tuoi furetti? Crocchette, carne cruda o preda intera?
Nutro solo con estruso (Kibbles), pollo cotto e carne adatta per il gatto; durante lo svezzamento per mamma e cuccioli uso il Convalescenze Support, un mangime altamente proteico.
Pensi che l’alimentazione naturale sia meglio di quella in estruso? O è uguale?
Mi dispiace ma non condivido la Barf o qualunque alimento crudo.
Qual’e’ la vita media dei tuoi furetti?
Tra i 6 e i 7 anni, ma abbiamo anche una furetta anziana di 10 anni.
Vivono fuori o in casa con voi?
In primavera e in estate sono sistemati fuori in grandi gabbie, ma ogni sera rientrano in casa. In inverno vivono e giocano in casa nostra.
Perché hai deciso di allevare?
Perché abbiamo avuto per molti anni solo maschi castrati, e le nostre prime femmine erano di una tale bellezza, che ero curiosa di sapere che tipo di madre potevano essere; la nostra prima cucciolata è stata una bella e piacevole esperienza, e le persone che presero i nostri primi cuccioli erano così contenti che non mordessero e che fossero molto belli che fui orgogliosa di essere una buona “mamma furetto”, di aver insegnato bene ai propri piccoli. Poi ritengo che le femmine che hanno avuto cuccioli diventano più gentili, anche con altre femmine, e non vi è alcuna prova scientifica che le femmine sterilizzate vivano più a lungo.
Inoltre, ci siamo costruiti una buona reputazione nel corso degli anni; troviamo sempre un’ottima sistemazione per i nostri cuccioli. E mi piace una essere una mamma furetto.
Quante volte l’anno porti i tuoi furetti dal veterinario? Vaccini i tuoi furetti contro il cimurro?
Portiamo i nostri furetti dal veterinario solo quando sono malati, e non non sono vaccinati perché non escono fuori in strada, o nel bosco, e non entrano mai in contatto con cani. Ma vacciniamo i cuccioli che vengono adottati da famiglie che hanno cani o che li portano fuori a spasso.
Infine, secondo te, cosa si dovrebbe fare per offrire ai furetti una vita lunga?
Credo che si debba sempre prendersi cura dei propri furetti: prima di acquistare un furetto ci si deve documentare anche attraverso internet su ciò che un furetto è, e che cosa si debba fare o non fare per dare loro la vita migliore. Credo si debba parlare con persone esperte in furetti, e ascoltarle, osservare il proprio furetto in quando è fuori dalla gabbia e come si comporta, e portarli subito dal veterinario se si pensa che ci sia qualcosa che non va.
E naturalmente, anche se so a molti non piacerà questa risposta, dovremmo in realtà non allevare colori speciali o angora, che so essere molto belli, ma penso anche che non siano sempre “forti”.

Hi Rea, I’m really happy to meet you, you told me that your liaison with ferrets started 35 years ago, would you like to tell us how it began?
My husband came home one day with a little strange animal that turned out to be a ferret , I was not so happy, because I thought he bit . But that was not so, he wanted to play. it was in the beginning very hard because you did not have any internet so you could only hunters ask how you dealt with a ferret . We heard that you could have two ferrets better together, so we bought a second man.
It turned out to be amazing animals, so we were in love. Over the years, there are other men and women come in, usually ferrets with disabilities that other people did not want , but we loved them. After years we breed, and because we have no children, so these are really our children, it’s always a great time with the puppies to educate them properly . And even though they are not really getting old, we do not want to live without ferrets.
In addition, our ferrets live in harmony with our cats, it is wonderful to look after them together.
After 35 years of ferrets, what did you understand about them?
I think they are very special animals, cute, play full, lovely, awesome, it is a cross breed between a dog and a cat, but for every human not suitable, they are very easy, but they need there attention
How do you feed your ferrets, kibbles or raw meat and the whole pray?
I feed only kibbles and cooked chicken,and cat meat, and for giving them treats, or the mama’s and kits eating Convalescence Support.
Do you think the barf feeding is best than kibbles? Or that’s the same?
Sorry I do not feed barf or prey or anything what is raw.
What is the average life of your ferrets?
Between 6 and 7 years, but we have also a old lady she is 10 now.
Do they live outside or inside the house?
In the spring and summer they have big outside cages, but every evening they coming inside. In the winter they are inside and playing in our house
Why did you decide to breed ferrets?
Because we had many years only castrated males, our first women was such a lovely girl, I was curious what kind of mother would she be, our first litter was so a beautiful and nice experience and the people what bought our first baby’s where so happy because the baby’s did not bite and where very cute, I was proud that I was a good ferret mama to learn my baby’s. Nexst I have the experience that women what get baby’s are very quietly and very kind to other women, and there is no evidence that sterilized women live longer.
In addition, we have built up such a reputation through the years, our baby; s always find another good home. And I love to be a ferret mama.
How many times do you take your ferrets to the vet? Do you vaccine them agaisnt distemper?
Our ferrets going only to the vet when they are sick, and no they are not vaccine because they do not come into contact with dogs , or going outside on the street or forest. But when our baby’s going to a new home, and there are dogs or the people are going outside with them, they are getting there vaccine.
At the end, in your opinion, what should we do for ferrets to give them a long life?
I think we most always take care off our ferret , before we buy a ferret read the internet, what a ferret is, and what you all must do or not must do for give them a very good live, I think talk to people with experience with ferret and listen to them, mind your ferret as they are out of the cage on their body language , go right with him to the vet if you think there is something
And of course, I know the must people do not like this answer, we must actually not breeding specials, or angora’s, I know they are so beautiful, but I think they are not always strong.
